The SpaceLogger W50 has been developed for economic logging of real-time wind speed and direction data when using Gill Instruments' anemometers with a single serial output and for full environmental data logging from the MetPak Weather Station.

SpaceLogger W50 is compatible with the following Gill Instruments' meteorological sensors:

These sensors may be set to output in the following compatible modes:
• ASCII UV (or UVW) continuous
• ASCII Polar continuous (default setting)
• ASCII Tunnel continuous
• MODBUS RTU (MaxiMet GMX range)

Data is stored on a removable SD or SDHC memory card. Current and historic data files may be accessed wirelessly using the SpaceLogger Real-time Communicator Software.

Data is sampled at 1Hz from the connected sensor. Each data record is date and time-stamped when it is stored. A new file (.CSV) is generated for each day's worth of data.

Raw wind & weather data is processed by the logger to calculate 10 minute averaged values with min and max readings during that period. This data set is recorded every 10 minutes in a separate daily .CSV file.

A Wi-Fi wireless local area network (WLAN) is required for remote access to the data stored on the logger. If this is temporarily unavailable, data may be downloaded directly from the SD card to a PC if it is removed from the SpaceLogger. Includes WPS functionality.

Configuration of the SpaceLogger for the WLAN is via a simple set-up file written to the SD card.

The SpaceLogger Launcher Software may connect to multiple loggers within the same WLAN at any time.

The SpaceLogger W50 Wireless may be enabled for FTP'ing of live wind & weather data to the WeatherFile.com website to provide access to the real-time data remotely.

The SpaceLogger W50 Wireless logger requires RS232 input; this may be direct from the sensor or via a WS-15A Display Unit for local display of live weather data. When long cable runs dictate use of RS485, a WS-15A Display or RS485 to RS232 converter enables connection to the logger.

SpaceLogger 50 Series Case Studies


Gwennap Head National Coastwatch Weather Station

Richard Paul Russell has provided a complete internet connected weather station utilising a SpaceLogger W50 for the National Coastwatch Institution at Gwennap Head in Cornwall. The Gill Metpak weather sensor data is captured by the W50 data logger enclosed in the WeatherFile Connection Unit (WCU) and then transferred via the W50's Wi-Fi module to the Local area network and the internet. The live and historic wind speed, wind direction, pressure, temperature and humidity data can then be viewed on any internet connected device via the WeatherFile website.

Richard Paul Russell have over 70 weather systems all using SpaceLogger W50s viewable on the WeatherFile website.

Ryde Pier, Isle of Wight, Wind Data

Richard Paul Russell Ltd has recently extended their WeatherFile network in the Solent with the addition of a Gill MaxiMet GMX200 sensor with a SpaceLogger W50 at Ryde Pier during the summer months.

This takes the Solent WeatherFile network to five sites and is an essential resource for sailors, water sport enthusiasts, sailing event organisers and others wishing to have live and accurate wind speed and direction measurements.

One of the main challenges faced when fitting this unit was to overcome the lack of a local power supply and Wi-Fi internet access. Our newly developed WeatherFile Mobile Unit (WMU) containing a W50 and associated 4G router allows data to be gathered directly from the Gill MaxiMet GMX200 sensor and sent to our WeatherFile website. This was locally powered through a deep cycle leisure battery (70Ahr) connected to a solar panel. The result is cable free live data through WeatherFile completely independent of mains power and local internet.

Industrial Emissions Monitoring Data

Richard Paul Russell have supplied SpaceLogger S100 for a chemical manufacturing facility requiring emissions data from the extractive laser gas monitoring equipment. The trace gas concentration measurements are made by direct absorption laser spectroscopy. The data from this equipment is captured by the S100 which is ethernet wired into the site's local area network. This live and historical data is then readily available on a server location to the relevant company employees.

Milk Pasteurizer Machine Data Back-up

Richard Paul Russell has provided a SpaceLogger S100 data logger to a supplier of milk pasteurizing equipment. The required pasteurization data on each batch is automatically recorded on the S100 and sent to a folder on the dairy's local area network.

Why this logger is so critical is that the normal method of recording the data requires a degree of manual interaction, and if this does not occur for some reason, the entire batch cannot be sold due to the lack of pasteurization data.

Mapping Conditions & Life on the Sea Bed

SpaceLogger S10 data loggers have been utilised to map the conditions and life on the ocean floor. SpaceLogger S10 data loggers were being towed at depths of 3000 metres whilst taking recordings of CTD (water conductivity, temperature and depth).

The SpaceLogger S10 data loggers were part of the equipment on three 3000 metre depth rated 'pods' along with batteries, video processing equipment and control electronics.

New Zealand Lamb Weighing System

Richard Paul Russell helps a customer of Wedderburn Scales produce perfect New Zealand lamb for your dinner table. The SpaceLogger S10 is incorporated into the Wedderburn hanging weigh system used to track the weight of chilling lamb carcases while they are spray chilled. The scale outputs the weight every minute to a remote display unit where it is also recorded by the S10 logger.

Straits of Malacca & Singapore Shipping Data

Richard Paul Russell has supplied a SpaceLogger S10 to capture the raw radar data on shipping passing through the Straits of Malacca & Singapore, the World's busiest shipping route with 90,000 transits per year. The automatic identification system (AIS) data from ships is sent from on-board transponders to allow live automatic tracking of ships by vessel traffic services (VTS). The logged data is required for near miss and accident investigation work by the maritime authorities.

The SpaceLogger A10 may take up to two 4-20mA analogue output. Readings are sampled at 75Hz, averaged over 1 second and time and date stamped when stored. The SpaceLogger A10 can be daisy chained for multiple load cell monitoring. Data is captured in a daily .csv file for easy analysis within a spreadsheet. The logger is used to capture the RS232 serial data from the audio recording equipment when used for in-vehicle interviews with high profile individuals. Manufacturing Quality Control For Water Softener Filters

Richard Paul Russell's SpaceLogger S10 is being used by the UK's number one selling water softener manufacturer. On a water filter production line, the dual channel S10 serial data logger is being prototyped to capture data from a Keyence sensor giving the filter height and the corresponding output from the Adam weigh scales. Once a month the SD card is collected from the logger and the data file (of type and format specified by the customer) is downloaded.

This development has allowed Richard Paul Russell to enter the small airfield market with equipment system supply for comprehensive live wind, weather and visibility data.

Eschmann Technologies Dental Autoclave Real-Time Cycle Data Management

Richard Paul Russell and Eschmann Technologies worked in close partnership to produce a highly bespoke real-time autoclave cycle data management system and electronic logbook. This involved creating a custom variant of the D50 Wi-Fi logger with associated real-time cycle management software.

The hardware customisation was in the areas of enclosure, brand labelling and over-moulded cable assembly. The software development was extensive to interpret the cycle data, allow manual input of additional tests and checks, facilitate user data analysis and present the combined data in the desired summary and detailed formats including Eschmann branded pdfs.

This was a relatively complex project that has provided Eschmann customers with an on-going very successful product, that is still standing the test of time some 10 years after first use.

Prestige Medical's Dental Decontamination Autoclave Cycle Logging

Richard Paul Russell have supplied Prestige over many years with several different variants of the SpaceLogger D10 for use with their decontamination autoclaves. The automatic recording of cycles by the logger replaces the printer and the manual filing of printouts, thus improving efficiency and reliability of record keeping for regulatory compliance.

The most recent customisation was for a re-designed PCB-only logger to be built-in to a new autoclave design, with particular requirements for the SD card interface with the autoclave control panel fascia. This involved a new PCB layout to accommodate several changes including a new push-push SD card connector.

MDS Medical's Dental & Veterinary Autoclave Data Management System

Richard Paul Russell developed with MDS Medical a custom variant of the SpaceLogger D10 and produced custom, branded Cycle Data Management software. The logger is supplied as PCB-only to be mounted internally in the autoclaves. To ensure the simplest integration into the autoclaves a design modification was done to allow the logger, normally requiring 12V, to run off the existing main control board printer connection rated at 5V. The Cycle Data Management software was matched to the output from the MDS range of 9 autoclaves to log, manage, and electronically store the cycles to aid compliance with HTM 01-05.

Large Scale Plasma Sterilizer Data

Richard Paul Russell has produced for the Renosem Co Ltd of Korea a custom variant of the SpaceLogger D10. Renosem is an innovative provider of Low Temperature Plasma Sterilizers that ensure infection prevention and microbial reduction.

The data logger is shipped to Renosem's manufacturing facility as PCB-only for internal fitting in their plasma sterilizers. The SD card, LED indicators and purge button are all accessible through a faceplate in the outer casing of the sterilizer.

The data is saved in daily text files, replicating the format that would be seen on a traditional paper printer-out.

On-board Vehicle Bin Weighing Systems

Richard Paul Russell Ltd have worked with Vehicle Weighing Solutions linking with their Enviroweigh load cell system which automatically weighs the contents of two and four wheeled bins. Installed in the cab of refuse vehicles this specific variant of the SpaceLogger T10 supplied with a custom interface cable assembly, is used to capture bin weight data from the vehicle telematics system to the removable memory card. This data is transferred to the refuse vehicle operator's admin system on return to the depot.

Further developments in this area have included Wi-Fi connectivity to allow direct data transfer as soon as soon as refuse or grit/salt spreader vehicles return to base.

Mettler Toledo Laboratory Weigh Scales

Richard Paul Russell has developed a custom variant of the SpaceLogger S10 for Mettler-Toledo in France to capture the continuous RS232 data from laboratory balances. The SpaceLogger S10 has a custom interface cable and configuration to capture exactly the data required, add a date/time stamp and record in the customer's specified format in a csv file. A second input is available and will for example allow a bar code reader to assign an ID with each item weighed.

The SpaceLogger T10 model is ideal for balances with a print command and RS232 output and will keep a text record identical to the paper print-out. Hence the requirement for a dedicated printer on the lab bench is removed.
